A file box has an improved latch and file retaining arrangement. The latch includes a hook-like member on the lid which engages with a latching mechanism. The latching mechanism includes a latch cover which is connected to the body of the box by a hinge. The hinge is pivotally affixed to both the latch cover and the body of the box. The latch cover may be swung into position to engage the first hook-like member and held into position to close the lid onto the box. The hook-like member and latch mechanism may be recessed into the lid and box body, and shaped to conform to the overall shape of the box, thus creating a smooth, uninterrupted look to the closed box. The hinge may be sized and shaped to fit within the latch cover to hide it from view when the lid is closed. The file retaining arrangement has a channel at the open end of the box body along its two sides. The channel is defined by an outer wall and an inner wall having a terminal edge, which supports the file folder's hanging element. The channel accommodates the hanging element. The arrangement also has a file retaining wall located generally above the inner wall when the lid is closed. The file retaining wall has a second terminal edge. The first and second terminal edges are separated by a vertical distance greater than the height of the portion of the hanging element supported by the first terminal edge, but no greater than twice that height, thereby preventing the hanging file holders from falling off of the first terminal edge, even if the closed box is inverted.
