ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 1. A latch needle for stitch forming textile machines, wherein the needle has a longitudinal direction and com- prises a needle shank having first and second ends, the needle shank having a latch slot formed therein extending in the longitudinal direction, the latch slot including a bearing location, the needle shank having a transversely extending pivot axis at the bearing location, and the needle shank further having a groove-like depression which extends from the latch slot toward the second end; a needle hook attached to the first end of the shank; a latch having first and second portions and first and second ends, the latch being pivotally mounted in the latch slot so that the latch is pivotal around the transversely extending pivot axis, the latch including a latch spoon in the first portion located to cooperate with the needle hook, the first portion of the latch extending from a position adjacent the bearing-location to the first end of the latch and the second portion of the latch extending from the position adjacent the bearing location to the second end of the latch, the latch further having an upper face, a frontal face, a contact surface, and a contact-free surface, wherein the frontal face, the contact surface and the contact-free surface are all disposed in the second portion of the latch, the frontal face is disposed at the second end of the latch, and the contact surface and the contact-free surface are disposed between the frontal face. and the upper surface: and an elongate spring element having first and second ends, wherein the first end is attached to the needle shank in the groove-like depression and the second end is freely disposed in the latch slot; and wherein the latch is movable between a closed position in which the latch spoon cooperates with the needle hook and the second end of the spring element contacts the contact surface, and the spring element biases the latch in a first pivoting direction, a completely open position in which the upper face of the latch engages the spring element and the spring element biases the latch in a second pivoting direction opposite to the first pivoting direction, and an intermediate position which is between the closed position and the completely open po- sition, the intermediate position being defined as the po- sition where the second end of the spring element contacts the contact surface, but the spring element no longer biases the latch, whereby the latch is freely pivotable from the intermediate position toward the completely open position until its upper face comes in to contact with the spring element.
