This invention provides an improved gate latching apparatus, with means for guiding a latch, wherein said latch is in the form of an elongated member, whose longitudinal axis runs parallel to a free edge of the gate, and remains parallel thereto throughout its guided travel at an oblique angle relative to the edge of said gate. The latch engages and supports a substantial portion of the gate edge, which helps prevent the gate from being either deflected or bent out of position. During disengagement, the gate remains supported until a significant portion of the latch travel has been completed, at which time the latch disengages the gate simultaneously over the entire length of the latch. If the latch is moved to a partially disengaged position while still retaining the gate and is then released, it will return to the fully engaged position through means of gravity or other force.
