Radical polymerizations are initiated by a combination initiator that comprises - N-alkyl-substituted tert-arylamines containing at least one aliphatic CH bond in the .alpha.-position; - metal compounds that are at least partly soluble in the material to be initiated and that accelerate the drying of unsaturated oils; and - carboxylic acids having pKa values of no less than about 0.9 and is activated upon contact with oxygen from the air. Polymerizable mixtures containing such a combination initiator may usefully be formulated as one part of multiple part adhesives, surface coatings, molding compounds, and the like that are storage stable in the absence of air, or even in the presence of air if formulated in at least two parts, with one of the above three parts of the initiator combination missing from each part.
