Apparatus and methods are provided for achieving a lateral wellbore connection in a subterranean well. In one described embodiment, a first wellbore is drilled intersecting a formation and then a second wellbore is drilled through a sidewall of a tubular string positioned in the first wellbore. Either prior to or subsequent to the second wellbore being drilled, a stabilizing material is positioned in an annulus between the tubular string and the first wellbore. The stabilizing material may also be forced into the formation to thereby enhance the properties of the formation.
