The invention relates to intervertebral spacers (10, 40, 82A/B, 100, 120, 150, 180, 190 and 220) for use in orthopedic treatment of spinal defects. The intervertebral space is formed of a shape memory polymer. The spacer can be fabricated into a desired configuration and then deformed into an alternative or deformed configuration. Cooling the deformed spacer effectively freezes the spacer into its deformed conformation. The deformed configuration can be selected to facilitate implantation of the spacer into a prepared disc space between adjacent vertebrae. During operation, the surgeon can heat the spacer to allow it to revert to its original configuration. The spacer in its original conformation is sized to restore and/or maintain the adjacent vertebrae in a desired conformation and disc space height.
L'invention se rapporte à des écarteurs intervertébraux (10, 40, 82A/B, 100, 120, 150, 180, 190 et 220) conçus pour être utilisés dans le traitement orthopédique de défauts spinaux. Ledit écarteur intervertébral est composé d'un polymère à mémoire de forme. Cet écarteur peut être fabriqué de manière à présenter une configuration souhaitée, puis déformé de manière à adopter une autre configuration ou configuration déformée. Le refroidissement de l'écarteur déformé gèle efficacement l'écarteur dans sa configuration déformée. Cette configuration déformée peut être choisie de manière à faciliter l'implantation dudit écarteur dans un espace discal préparé entre des vertèbres adjacentes. Au cours de l'opération, le chirurgien peut chauffer l'écarteur pour permettre à celui-ci de revenir à sa configuration originale. L'écarteur dans sa configuration originale est dimensionné de manière à permettre un retour et/ou un maintien des vertèbres adjacentes dans une configuration souhaitée avec une hauteur d'espace discal donnée.
