ABSTRACT A method for improving the quality of a mastic coating system by using a latex barrier tiecoat which is composed of a water-insoluble latex polymer and a multivalent metal ion. The tiecoat is applied to a substrate and then a mastic coating is applied to the tiecoat to yield a mastic coating system having excellent resistance to blistering when the mastic coating system is exposed to long-term ponded water.
