Abstract of the disclosure: A latex is described, which is composed of a core of a known latex and a shell of a copolymer of one or more ethylenic unsaturated monomers and a monomer of the formula I Image I wherein n denotes 1 - 6; R1 denotes H; R2 denotes H or CH3; and R3 and R4 denote C2-C6-alkyl, aryl or another group which ensures that the compounds of the formula I have sufficient insolubility in water, and a process for the preparation of a latex of this type. This latex is used for the preparation of conjugates with biologically active substances. These conjugates are particularly suitable for serological or immunological assay procedures.
