Disclosed is an improved latex composition which is suitable for use as a coating or adhesive and which exhibits a superior ability to form a substantially uniform film upon a substrate in the absence of excessive foaming during handling and during application to a substrate. This composition consistsessentially of (a) an aqueous dispersion medium (b) from 40 to 60 percent by weight of discrete solid polymeric particles formed by the polymerization of at least one ethylenically-unsaturated monomer; (c) from 0.25 to 1.5 percent by weight dissolved of a normally liquid predominantly hydrophobic nonionic alcoholethoxylate surfactant; and (d) from 0.05 to 1 percent by weight of a solely hydrophobic defoaming agent. This composition can be applied to a substrate and then dried up to form the requested uniform polymeric film.
