The layer press (10) according to the invention serves for pressing sheet-like articles (12) arranged in a stack (14) . It has an accommodating chamber (18) for accommodating the sheet-like articles (12) and also a pressing arrangement (34) with a contact-pressure lever (42) which can be pivoted about a rotary spindle (44) and on which is arranged a contact-pressure body (31) with a contact-pressure element (32). For pressing purposes, the spacing between a base (20) of the accommodating chamber (18) and the contact-pressure element (32) located in a standby position (BS) is reduced. Since the rotary spindle (44) is arranged at or beneath the height of the standby position (BS), the contact-pressure element (32) is moved in the direction of the outer periphery of the accommodating chamber (18) during pressing, so that it sweeps over the uppermost sheet-like article (16) with smoothing action in the process.
