ABSTRACT A product is provided for absorbing body fluid that has the property of retaining a greater proportion of absorbent fluid in an interior layer. The product includes an absorbent element having. a plurality of absorbent layer including a first layer comprising of cellulose fibers. Adjacent to the first layer is a second layer comprising, in admixture, peat moss and finely ground mechanical wood pulp, the mechanical wood pulp being present in n ratio of at least 0.35 grams per gram of peat moss.
