2122369 9308981 PCTABS00021 A crystalline material capable of high guest loading greater than three and exhibiting independence of the Gibbs free energy function from guest concentration and a method for its manufacture is provided. The crystalline material may belong to the class of MeyChz, where Me is selected from the group consisting of Bi and Sb, Ch is selected from the group consisting of Te, Se and S, y is 1 or 2 and z is in the range of 1 to 3, such that the material has a defect density which is sufficiently low to permit intercalation of at least 3 moles of lithium within van der Waals channels per one mole of said material without significant distortion of the lattice. An intercalated material with guest loading up to 10 mole/mole host is provided.
