"LAYERED DEHYDROGENATION CATALYST PARTICLES" ABSTRACT A novel hydrocarbon conversion catalyst system comprises a catalyst particle containing a platinum group metal component, a modifier metal component selected from the group consisting of tin, germanium, rhenium and mixtures thereof, an optional alkali or alkaline earth metal component, mixtures thereof and an optional halogen component, on a solid refractory oxide support having an equivalent nominal diameter of at least 850 microns. The platinum group metal component and the modifier metal component are surface-impregnated in such a manner that the average concentration of the surface impregnated platinum group component and the modifier metal component in the outside 100 micron layer of the particle are at least twice the concentration of the respective components in the 200 micron diameter center core of the catalyst particle. The novel catalyst system has particular utility as a hydrocabon dehydrogenation catalyst A method of preparing the catalyst is also disclosed.
