A B S T R A C T LAYING A PIPELINE IN ARCTIC OFFSHORE WATERS The present invention provides a method and apparatus for laying a pipeline in Arctic offshore waters with the use of a directional drilling technique, wherein pipeline segments (2, 6 and 9) are placed along arcuate underground paths, thereby minimizing exposure to ice gouging and eliminating the hazards associated with unstable permafrost. A special drilling-pipeline construction vessel (11) is also provided which has a conical shape with reinforced outer walls to resist ice forces, which vessel (11) includes means (13) to install deep underground pipeline segments (16, 17) and means (20) for connecting and protecting the adjacent ends of the pipeline segments (16, 17).
