-11- ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Water-soluble alkali metal or ammonium com- pounds are added to slurries of nickeliferous oxide ores which are leached with sulfuric acid at tempera- tures between about 230° and about 300°C. The alkali metal or ammonium compound additions improve the handling characteristics of the slurry, nickel recov- eries, settling rates and compaction rates and lower scaling rates.
