TITLE LEAD-ACID BATTERY CONSTRUCTION INCLUDING IMPROVED MEANS FOR OXYGEN RECOMBINATION ABSTRACT A rechargeable lead-acid battery construction includes a combination of specially-constructed electrodes and separator materials which provides for improved oxygen recombination during charging while permitting the presence of an excess of operating electrolyte. Battery cells of this nature are self-regulating such that cell voltages during constant current charging are limited to approximately 2.38 volts. Several embodiments are disclosed, each having conventional positive and negative "operating" electrode portions spaced apart by relatively thick, high resistance separator materials and also including "oxygen-evolving" positive electrode portions and thin, low-capacity "recombining" negative electrode portions spaced apart by relatively thin, low-resistance separator materials. Electrode sets which provide cell voltage limitation and oxygen recombination and which may be added to otherwise conventional lead-acid battery cell are also disclosed.
