21894-408 ABSTRACT A lead-acid battery capable of delivering high low- temperature discharge current for a long operating time is dis- closed. The low-temperature performance of the battery is en- hanced by supplying its negative electrode with an expander. The expander, a soluble lignin derivative, is liberated into the electrolyte during formation and operation of the battery, as a result of oxidative degradation of a lignin-containing repository substance added to the active material of the positive electrode. The liberated expander is taken up from the electro- lyte by the negative electrode. It makes possible to improve the electrical charge retention by the negative electrode with- out adversely affecting its low-temperature performance, by producing the electrode without adding an expander.
