Lead composition for use in the production of battery components particularly the electrode plates, having specific amounts or ranges of trace elements to maximise battery life. Ranges of trace elements include the combination of 20- 100 ppm silver, 250-1000 ppm bismuth, and 250-1000 ppm zinc; or 100-1000 ppm antimony and 100-1000 ppm iron; ar 250-1000 ppm bismuth, 250-1000 ppm zinc, 20-100 ppm silver, not more than 20 ppm antimony and not more than 30 ppm iron.
