ABSTRACT Automatic means are disclosed to safeguard lead screw driven machines from excessive overloads that occur when machine motion is obstructed. The lead screw which rotates to produce machine motion is- supported for axial movement, but axial movement is normally resisted by locating springs. However, the shaft will be caused to move axially or extrude against the spring force when machine movement is obstructed. Friction braking elements are provided to stop the rotation of the lead screw when the shaft moves axially from its normal operating position.
