Patent

CA 2660265

A leaf seal (3) for sealing a radial gap between a stator and rotor (1) of a turbomachine has a plurality of metallic sealing leaves (4), which are arranged in a row, and are attached to a carrier (6), and are arranged concentrically around the circumference of the rotor (1) of the turbomachine. The seal (3) has a front plate and a rear plate (8) which are attached to the carrier (6) and extend over the circumference of the seal (3) on both sides of the sealing leaves (4). According to the invention, the seal (3) has an apparatus (14) for controlled variation of the axial distance (d) between the rear plate (8) and the sealing leaves (4) during operation of the turbomachine. The deliberate variation of the gap width (d) makes it possible to optimize the sealing effect, with minimized wear of the seal, and therefore makes possible an increased operating life of the seal.
