A water leak detector for use in a home or other building includes a plurality of battery operated sensors for placing in areas where a leak is likely to occur. When a leak closes a circuit in any of the sensors, a VHF signal is transmitted to a control assembly containing a CPU, which sends a signal to an electric valve for shutting off the water supply to the building. At the same time, a buzzer is activated and an LED indicator on the control assembly lights up, providing an indication of the location of the leak. The control assembly can also activate an automatic telephone dialer.
