This invention is a self-study learning method and apparatus for use with any written material. The learning is accomplished by the method of blacking out certain portions of written matter to allow the user to test his or her recall, memory and/or problem solving skills. In this method, a student uses a colored marker to highlight certain portions of the written matter so that the written matter is still visible, a second complementary colored marker is also used to highlight other portions of the written matter. A transparency of the identical color to the first marker allows the written matter highlighted by the first marker to be seen, however, the highlighting of the second marker appears black, obliterating the written matter. Similarly, a transparency of the identical color to the second marker enables viewing of the written matter highlighted by the second marker, but blackens the portions highlighted by the first marker.
