PATENT APPLICATION of PATRICIA MARIE THOMAS STEWART and ANTON GEORGES EL A'MMA for LEATHER TREATMENT WITH SELECTED AMPHIPHILIC COPOLYMERS DN 88-14 MSA:vjc ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE: A method of improving the strength, temper and water resistance of leather utilizing selected amphiphilic copolymers is provided. The amphiphilic copolymers are formed from a predominant amount of at least one hydrophobic monomer and a minor amount of at least one copolymerizable hydrophilic monomer. The method is particularly useful as a one step substitute for conventional retanning and fatliquoring treatment steps. In a preferred embodiment the amphiphilic copolymers also provide a significant degree of water resistance to the leather.
