2098305 9210204 PCTABS00013 Many microorganisms (such as bacteria) are capable of causing disease or other conditions in a host animal by attaching to host cellular receptors by means of sugar-specific lectins or adhesins. Even non-pathogenic bacteria may give rise to, for example, non-specific colitis, by this means. Plant lectins, such as Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA), can be administered to compete with, for example. bacterial adhesins for the sugar-containing receptors, thereby treating or preventing the bacterially-mediated infection. Such lectins can also be fed to livestock to keep down infectin and present a preferable alternative to the routine use of antibiotics for this purpose.
