This invention discloses a method to protect the exposed surface formed by each of the legs of a rotary cone rock bit. A multiplicity of domed diamond inserts are strategically positioned in each surface of the leg to protect, for example, the lubricant reservoir system of a sealed bearing bit, the ball hole plug and the shirtail portion of the leg adjacent each of the cones from abrasion, erosion and corrosion during operation of the bit in a borehole.
