A contact lens (10) is molded with indicia (64) that are etched into a mold tool 1. In one embodiment, the tool is made of stainless steel and is masked and electrochemically etched with a solution of sodium chloride. The voltage and current are DC and they and the time and temperature are controlled to provide a desired depth of etch.
