This invention relates to the preparation of molds (10) for the production of contact lenses and other ophthalmic articles. By using an inorganic material to coat the optical surfaces (2, 3) and sidewalls (12, 13) of mold parts (6, 7) made from clear-resin materials, manufacturers can produce lens molds (10) with greater dimensional stability and chemical resistance. In addition to protecting the clear resin from interaction with otherwise reactive monomers from which the molded article (8) is made, such coatings (11) can also be used to achieve preferential release of the molded article. The resulting mold (10) is especially useful for providing an economical way to improve manufacturing quality of contact lenses.

L'invention concerne la préparation de moules (10) pour la production de lentilles de contact et d'autres articles ophtalmologiques. Grâce à l'utilisation d'une matière inorganique pour le revêtement des parois latérales (12, 13) et des surfaces (2, 3) optiques de parties de moules (6, 7) constituées de matières de résine transparente, les fabricants peuvent produire des moules (10) pour lentilles présentant une stabilité dimensionnelle et une résistance chimique accrues. Outre la protection de la résine transparente contre le contact avec des monomères réactifs entrant dans la constitution de l'article moulu (8), ces revêtements (11) peuvent servir à faciliter la libération de l'article moulu. Le moule (10) résultant peut notamment constituer un moyen économique d'améliorer la qualité de fabrication des lentilles de contact.
