F o r m 24 ( ss. 21, 31, 34, and 142 ) A B S T R A C T Shore erosion on the Great Lakes and other large inland lakes results in the annual loss of millions of dollars in lost land and damages to structures. There are numerous ways in whichshores can be protected. These include: Beach Nourishment Revetments Perch Beaches Shorewalls Headlands & Groynes Breakwaters & Jetties Protection works that gradually dissipate wave energy (i.e. beaches) are preferable to vertical structures (shorewalls) that directly confront the full force of waves. The amount of energy contained in a wave is directly proportional to its wavelength and the square of its height. For instance, a two-foot wave with a period of five seconds between crests contains over 4000 foot-pounds of energy per foot of wave crest (horizontal linear foot of wave crest). A four-foot wave with the same period contains over 16,000 foot-pounds of energy per foot of wave crest. Shorewalls are shore protection measures with a vertical face. They may be either thin structures penetrating deep into the ground (i.e. sheet piling) or gravity structures resting on the surface. They must be structurally designed to withstand the full force of waves breaking against them. When such occurs the energy is dissipated and reflected. Dissipation results in some of the energy being directed downward to the supporting substrate, upward to the top of the shorewall and the remainder into the structure itself. The downward forces soon scour the supporting substrate at the toe of the shorewall and weaken the structure, while the upward forces cause water to overtop the crest of the shorewall and penetrate the supporting backfill causing a hydraulic head to develop and loss of material through erosion. The Lenson Energy Dissipator for Shorewalls addresses these latter two concerns - elimination of toe scour and overtopping of shorewalls.
