ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus is provided to determine the position of a liquid/liquid interface or a liquid/vapour interface. The method makes use of the property of different materials to moderate or absorb neutrons. An emitter of fast neutrons is positioned adjacent the vessel containing the interface and a detector of slow neutrons is positioned to receive at least some slow neutrons emerging from the vessel. By monitoring the neutron emission at several points the interface position can be determined.
