ABSTRACT A method and means for operating a levelling device consisting of a levelling bar for levelling coal in the chambers of a horizontal-chamber coke- oven provided with levelling holes for the passage of the levelling bar and with a refractory duct surrounding the levelling bar. The mouth of the duct is placed against the edge of the levelling hole and is held thereto by posi- tive air pressure. During the operation of the levelling device, air is drawn out at the refractory duct in the vicinity of the mouth. The ratio between the volume of air supplied and the volume of air drawn out is adjust- able such that at a selected furnace pressure, preferbly the lowest furnace pressure, the volume of air drawn out is equal to the volume of air supplied.
