A lever type traction machine which disposes between side plates for rotatably supporting a load sheave and at both radial sides thereof a pair of chain holders for holding toward the load sheave a chain entering between the side plates to engage with the load sheave and which is provided at the rear side of each chain holder in the entering direction of the chain with a chain swelling restraint portion for restraining the chain from swelling at the rear of the chain holder.
