The invention relates to an in vitro method of screening for candidate compounds for the preventive or curative treatment of alopecia, which comprises determining the ability of a compound to modulate the expression or the activity of the LGR5 receptor, and also to the use of modulators of the expression or of the activity of this receptor for treating alopecia. The invention also relates to methods for the diagnosis or prognosis, in vitro, of this disease.
