A lid lifting mechanism (24) for heavy vessel lids (14) provides for optimum mechanical advantage in counterbalancing the weight of the lid when pivoting the lid to an open position. The mechanism has a pivot arm (26) secured to the lid and a pivot mount (28) intermediate the length of the pivot arm where the pivot mount is secured to the vessel container (12). The pivot arm extends beyond the pivot mount (28) to provide a distal end (30). A pretensioned retracting device (32) is connected to the distal end by a connector (34) which can be selectively moved along the arm to increase or decrease the moment arm length. Such movement of the connector or the pretensioned device adjusts the extent of retracting device assist in pivoting the lid to a lid open position. This system provides for maximum mechanical advantage while adjusting for build up of material on the inside of the lid.

Cette invention concerne un mécanisme (24) élévateur de couvercle pour couvercles (14) de récipients lourds offrant une force de levier optimale pour contrebalancer le poids du couvercle lorsqu'on fait basculer celui-ci en position ouverte. Le mécanisme présente un bras de pivotement (26) fixé au couvercle et un pallier de pivotement (28) situé au milieu du bras de pivotement, au moyen duquel le pallier de pivotement est fixé au récipient (12). Le bras de pivotement s'étend au-delà du pallier de pivotement (28) afin de former une extrémité distale (30). Un dispositif rétracteur sous tension (32) est relié à l'extrémité distale par un raccord (34) pouvant être déplacé le long du bras afin d'augmenter ou de diminuer la longueur du bras dont dépend le moment. Un tel mouvement du raccord ou du dispositif sous tension adapte la contribution du dispositif rétracteur au mouvement de basculement du couvercle en position ouverte. Ce système offre une force de levier maximale tout en permettant de s'adapter à l'accumulation de matière à l'intérieur du couvercle.
