ABSTRACT I have conceived of an invention which essentially provides means for freely floating the respective elevation of the free end of a lifeline by a mechanical means which does not require the oral direction of a workman to third parties on the ground to control the relative free length of the lifeline irrespective of worker elevation. The lifeline system of the invention incorporates as operative elements, a rotatably and lockable spool, a length of lifeline which is wound onto the spool, a means for biasing and for control of the spool rotation, that provides the function of allowing the spool to rotate and also to play out at a slow rate, so that the workman himself may on the one hand regulate the relative free end position of the lifeline simply by pulling and releasing the lifeline slowly. Thus, if the lifeline length is quickly moved or attempted to be moved from one length to another, the spool rotation is stopped or arrested but then allowed to rotate slowly under control (frictional or braking) so as to inhibit further playout of the lifeline that is faster than a predetermined rate of about 2 feet per second. This effectively prevents sudden stops and injury while permitting a controlled decent to the ground of a worker who has fallen from a working elevation.
