ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A lift-off device for the doors of oven chambers of a horizontal chamber coke oven is disclosed, wherein the operation of lifting and manipulating the door by the device is governed by a pair of pulse counters operatively associated with the mechanism of the lifting claws of the device, the respective counters being controlled by suitably disposed switches actuated by the lift-off device as the claws are raised or lowered. The invention enables automation of the relatively complex sequence of vertical and horizontal movements of the device when removing or reinserting the door.
