ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is concerned with a ligating clip applying instrument for applying a clip having first and second leg members joined at their proximal ends by a resilient hinge and terminating at their distal ends in latch means. The clip applying instrument of the invention comprises a pair of handles pivoted about a hinge point and extending forward beyond the hinge point to form a pair of clip closing jaws having opposing innerfaces. The first jaw has a recessed, dished, clip-receiving channel in the innerface thereof extending from adjacent the tip of the jaw towards the hinge portion and effective to allow the first leg member of the clip to partially rotate in the channel, the channel having a length substantially equal to the length of the clip to be applied by the instrument. The second jaw has a corresponding recessed, clip-receiving channel in the innerface thereof with integral clip-retaining means for restraining the second leg member of the clip against forward movement while permitting the rotation of the first leg member as the clip is closed by the instrument.
