ABSTRACT Typically, rifle sighting devices consist of a fixed, muzzle-mounted front sight and a vertically adjustable rear sight mounted toward the breach. Aiming involves the visual alignment of the two sights relative to one another and to the target. In this invention, a pair of precisely bored cylinders replaces the conventional rear sight, and the entire apparatus is installed on a movable bar, hinged at the front and attached to the rear distance adjustment mechanism. Thus all sighting components may be adjusted for distance from the target auto- matically, eliminating the error inherent in moving the rear sight alone. The cylinders act as a guidance system in one of two ways, both of which utilize oncoming light to indicate the exact moment at which the gun is in a correct firing configura- tion. In the first, a pair of jets mounted on either side of a hood covering the front sight transmit light through the two cylinders, to the peephole and the shooter's eye. This light, in the form of flashes, is visible only when all components are properly aligned, enabling the shooter to concentrate on align- ing the front sight with the target. Alternately, the jets are omitted, and the shooter anticipates impending optimum shooting position by the appearance of a narrow semi-circle of light resulting from the characteristic construction and relative size and location of the front sight hood and the two cylinders.
