Light-colored phenolic-modified rosin esters, suitable for use as, for example, tackifiers in adhesive compositions, are provided. The resins may be prepared by reacting together rosin, a phenolic compound, formaldehyde or a reactive equivalent thereof, and a non-phenolic hydroxyl-containing organic compound in the presence of at least one lightening agent selected from phenol sulfide compounds, phosphorous acid, esters of phosphorous acid, and hypophosphite salts. The formaldehyde or reactive equivalent is present in an amount ranging from about 1.1 to about 3.5 equivalents of -CHO moieties per 1 equivalent of Ar-OH moiety of the phenolic compound, in order to obtain rosin esters having desirably low color, and adequately low molecular weight to effectively function as tackifiers.
L'invention concerne des colophanes estérifiées, modifiées par un composé phénolique, de couleur claire, qui sont propres à être utilisées, par exemple, comme agents collants dans des compositions adhésives. Ces résines peuvent se préparer en faisant réagir une colophane, un composé phénolique, un formaldéhyde ou autre réactif équivalent et un composé organique hydroxyle non phénolique en présence d'au moins un agent d'éclaircissement choisi parmi des composés de sulfure de phénol, l'acide phosphoreux, des esters d'acide phosphoreux, et des sels d'hypophosphite. Le formaldéhyde ou le réactif équivalent est présent à raison de 1,1 à 3,5 équivalents de fractions -HO pour un équivalent de fraction Ar-OH du composé phénolique, ce qui permet d'obtenir des colophanes estérifiées présentant la faible coloration désirée, et un poids moléculaire suffisamment faible pour jouer efficacement leur rôle d'agents collants.
