ABSTRACT A light device for airport runways, roads or the like has at least one lamp disposed in a casing having a trans- parent, flat cover from which a well-defined light beam is emitted. The cover has a planar external surface and a stepped internal surface. The lamp is adapted to emit light rays impinging substantially at right angles on the stepped surface portions of the cover, so that the light rays, upon refraction at the planar external surface, are emitted at a desired small angle. The invention is characterised by the fact that the cover consists of a plurality of inclined discs of transparent material with interface layers of a light absorbing or light reflecting nature. These layers are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the stepped internal surface portions so that light rays impinging at oblique angles onto the surface portions will be cancelled out by absorption in the interface layers or total reflection at the planar external surface of the cover. This effect serves further to help in forming a well-defined light beam.
