An alpha-numeric display arrangement, designed to be vandal-proof, has an opaque mould plate (24) mounted on the reverse of a metal front plate (10). A plurality of elongate apertures (22) in the plate (10) each form one of a plurality of segments of the alpha-numeric display. Elongate apertures (36) of the mould plate (24) are accurately aligned with respective ones of the apertures (22) in the front plate (10). Molten illuminable material is introduced to a required level in each of the contiguous aperture pairs (22, 36). A space is left above the solidified material in which a light emitting diode mounted on a lighting board (38) is received. Thus, each of the apertures is served by a light emitting diode (40) which is in optical communication with the transparent material (42) provided within each of the apertures.
