ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A diode for both emitting and detecting light of predetermined wavelength. The diode comprises a substrate and four layers. The substrate is made of a semiconductor material having a first conductivity type. The first semiconductor layer has the first conductivity type, is doped less heavily than and is disposed on the substrate. This first layer has a forbidden band transparent to the said light. The second layer, disposed on the first layer, is made of a semiconductor material different from the semiconductor material of the first layer and is doped in the first conductivity type or in a second conductivity type opposite to the first, less heavily than the substrate. This second layer has a forbidden band suitable for absorbing and emitting the light of predetermined wavelength. The third layer, disposed on the second layer, is made of a semiconductor material different from the semiconductor material of the second layer, and is doped in a second conductivity type opposite to the first conductivity type less heavily than the substrate. This third layer has a forbidden band having a different value than the forbidden band of the second layer, the third layer forbidden band being transparent to the said light. The fourth layer, disposed on said third layer is made of a semi- conductor material different from the semiconductor materials of the second and third layers, and is doped in the second conduc- tivity type less heavily than the substrate. This fourth layer has a forbidden band of different value than the second and third layers, the fourth layer forbidden band being transparent to the light, the fourth layer including a central region and a peripheral region.
