ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A light-firable thyristor is disclosed formed of a semiconductor body having an N-emitter layer at one surface contacted with a first electrode. A P-emitter layer is provided on another surface of the semiconductor body and contacted with a second electrode. N and P type base layers are provided between the two emitter layers. One of the N-emitter and P-emitter layers has a light-active semiconductor region, gate-controlled MIS structures, and partial regions which are selectively connected together by controllable emit- ter short-circuit paths formed by the MIS structures.
