A box beam has an outer shell made from sheet metal and an inner core made from synthetic plastic material disposed inside the outer shell. The shell is preferably made of light gauge steel and the inner core may comprise polyurethane foam. Reinforcement blocks are provided at the ends of the beam and a cap plate is disposed on a top face of the box beam which may include integral joist hangers or tabs for supporting members associated with the box beam.
