ABSTRACT The invention relates to a light valve semiconductor device; a light valve incorporating such device; and an image projection device incorporating the light valve. The light valve semiconductor device comprises a composite substrate including an electric insulating substrate, and a semiconductor single crystal thin film formed over the substrate; and a pixel array portion formed over the composite substrate and including a group of switch elements for energizing at least a group of pixel electrodes selectively. The light valve of the invention has an opposed substrate opposed to the composite substrate at a predetermined gap; and an electrooptical material filling up the gap for optically changing in accordance with the selective energizations of the individual ones of the pixel electrodes. The invention provides a super-small light valve device having a remarkably high pixel density and a remarkably small pixel size. A video projection device which is assembled with a light source, an enlarging lens system and the present light valve device has a super-small size and a high resolution.
