Abstract The new design concept is applicable to a derrick with three or more legs. The derrick construction tapers little or not at all towards the "head" which is of new, unique and lightweight construction not previously used for drill rigs. It is not based upon a box and girders. Instead it is based upon the shape of a convex membrane with all the mechanical parts suspended therefrom, hanging within the main frame of the derrick. Tension members affix the item(s) which hold the mechanical parts and tie them back to the structure. During erection of the derrick, loads and stresses are more in line with the length of main members of the structure instead of across them as is currently the case at periods of time during the erection of conventional derricks. Under the new concept the loads and stresses on the derrick structure are reduced as also is the loading on the hydraulic cylinder.
