A lighted display is provided for use in an appliance such as a thermostat. The lighted display is capable of illumination by a user of the appliance as needed to help the user read the display when light from other sources is unavailable or is inadequate. Each lighted display includes indicia on a translucent display body and a light source positioned behind the translucent display body. A switch is connected to the light source for illumination as needed.
