An apparatus and method for illuminating the exterior cargo area of a vehicle. The present invention provides an application of a festoon light bulb for illuminating the exterior cargo area, such as the bed of a truck. A light bulb holder unit is provided to receive a festoon light bulb. The light bulb holder unit is designed to comply with the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standards for performance within a small package area. The light bulb holder unit and the festoon light bulb may be used in accordance with an LED assembly to provide a lighting system used for illuminating the exterior cargo area of a vehicle along with indicating the use of a braking system on a vehicle.
