LIGHTNING DETERRENT ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A lightning deterrent is disclosed herein for use in protecting high structures against strikes by lightning and to decrease the quantity of electrical noise in RF transmissions from transmitters on which the lightning deterrent is mounted. A lightning deterrent for use on a structure having a high point which is to be protected from lightning strikes by the connection of the deterrent to the high point and the connection of the deterrent to ground includes a conductive core preferrably formed in a partially or fully closed loop; a plurality of wires, each joined to the conductive core in a uniform density per unit length along the length of the conductive core, each wire being joined to the conductive core in proximity to its center to form an ion dissipating structure; and a mounting structure having a plurality of members each having first and second ends, the first ends of each of the members being coupled to different points on the loop of the conductive core with the second ends being adapted to be coupled to the top of the structure. The number of wires N is preferrably substantially equal to or greater than the quantity 5H x D wherein H is the elevation in feet above sea level of the top of the structure to be protected and D is the diameter of the circle passing through the point on the cross-section of the trans- mitter at its highest altitude which is located farthest from the centroid of the cross-section.
