A braking system is disclosed which uses lightweight materials for the structure thereof and specialized coatings on the braking surfaces to protect the underlying material. Recessed portions are provided in the braking surface for the capture of breakaway material of the rotor or pad which otherwise can gouge the braking surface and cause extensive damage, if not failure thereof. The preferred structure uses a high strength aluminum alloy as forming the underlying support structure of a rotor with a glazing on the braking surfaces of the rotor. The pads preferably include copper powder to form and/or replenish the glazing on the braking surfaces.
