- 13 - Abstract of the Disclosure LIGHTWEIGHT BEAM OR LOADING RAMP The ramp has an upper flange (25) and a lower flange (27), joined together by four regularly spaced webs (29), thereby defining three square boxes (34). The walls of the boxes comprise slender columns, which might tend to buckle but for the fact that the walls, though very thin near the corners of the boxes, are thicker over the zone (36) of the walls between the corners. The weight saving due to the thinning of the walls near the junctions is substantial. The ramp is welded from extruded aluminum sections, and is much stronger than conventional beams of the sane mass. (Fig 1)
